This episode explores how Half Dome lost 20% of it's dome by the glacier bulldozers that filled the area 20,000 years ago. We answer why the granite monolith lost huge portions of it's rock and why it's neighbor, El Capitan did not. Half Dome: The Rock That Was Never Whole

Picture this. You're standing in Yosemite Valley looking up. Across the valley there's this enormous round wall of gray granite; like someone took a giant stone ball the size of a mountain and sliced it clean in half. One side is smooth and rounded, like the top of an egg. The other side is just gone - a flat, sheer cliff dropping thousands of feet straight down.

And almost everyone who sees it for the first time asks the same question: what in the world could cut a mountain in half?

Today we're going to answer that. And I'll tell you right now, almost everyone who guesses gets it wrong. Even grown-ups. Even some tour guides. Let's go find out what actually happened to Half Dome.

Welcome to National Park Scouts, the show where curious kids discover America's wildest places. I'm Jenni. We are back in Yosemite National Park. In episode one, we found out how giant rivers of ice - glaciers - carved this entire valley like a bulldozer made of ice the size of a skyscraper. In episode two, we met El Capitan: one solid, gigantic wall of granite that those glaciers ground against for millions of years.

Today, we're heading to El Capitan's neighbor across the valley - a rock so famous its image is on a quarter. And we're finally going to bust the biggest myth in the whole park. This is Half Dome. And it turns out it was never actually a whole dome to begin with.


Busting the Myth


Okay, so here's the myth that almost everyone believes: a long, long time ago, Half Dome was a complete round dome, like a giant marble. Then one day a massive glacier came through and sliced it clean through the middle - like a knife through an apple - and dragged the other half away. Half a dome. Half Dome. That makes sense, right?

Except that's not what happened. Not even close.

Geologists - scientists who study rock and how the earth changes over time - have actually measured this. They think Half Dome is only missing about 20% of its original shape. Not 50%, 20%. If Half Dome were a snack cut into ten equal slices, it's only missing two of them. It was never a full dome to begin with, and it never lost half of anything.

So if a glacier didn't slice this rock clean in half, what did happen here? Hold on to that question, scouts, because the real answer goes back even further than glaciers. It goes all the way back to volcanoes.


Chapter One: Same Rock as El Capitan

Way back about 90 to 100 million years ago, this rock started out as melted liquid rock called magma, deep underground. It cooled slowly over thousands of years into solid granite.

Wait, have we heard this before? Yes - that's the exact same story as El Capitan from episode two. A different batch cooled around roughly the same stretch of deep time. Same recipe, different rock.

So if Half Dome and El Capitan are basically cousins, made of practically the same stuff, sitting across the same valley, scraped by the exact same glaciers, here's the real question of the day: why did El Capitan stay one solid piece, and Half Dome end up split?


Chapter Two: The One Crack

Remember from episode two: glaciers are like giant, slow-moving conveyor belts of ice, and they need something to actually grab onto to rip rock away. Smooth granite with no cracks in it? The ice just slides right over it. That's why El Capitan is still one giant, unbroken wall today.

But this particular piece of granite - the one that would become Half Dome - had one long crack running straight down what would become its front face. It was already there, long before any glacier showed up. Nobody knows for certain why this rock cracked and El Capitan didn't; sometimes it's just how a rock happens to cool and settle. But that one crack made all the difference.


Chapter Three: What the Ice Ripped Away

When the glaciers finally ground through this valley, they found that crack in Half Dome. And ice is really good at exactly one thing: finding a weakness and making it worse, over and over, for ages and ages.

The glacier pried loose another chunk of rock along that crack. Then another. Then another. Grinding away one piece at a time. That's the sheer, flat face of Half Dome you see from the valley today - not a clean slice, a slow, repeated tearing along one single crack for an unbelievably long time.

So here's where we are so far: same rock as El Capitan, but this one had a crack, and the ice found it. Now here's the surprising part.


Chapter Four: What the Ice Never Reached

Even the biggest glacier that moved through this valley - and it was enormous - stopped hundreds of feet short of the top of Half Dome. The ice never touched the summit at all. So that smooth, rounded back and top of Half Dome? Ice didn't shape that. Something completely different did.

To understand how it happened, imagine you're buried under a mountain of heavy blankets, pressing down on you from all sides. Then someone pulls the blankets off. What do you do? You take a big breath, stretch your arms out, and expand.

That is exactly what Half Dome did. For millions of years, tons and tons of heavy rock sat right on top of it, squeezing it underground. But as the surface slowly wore away, all that weight disappeared, and the granite underneath finally got to stretch and expand. When rock relaxes like that, it does something strange: giant, curved slabs, some as thick as a school bus, start to peel right off the surface.

Scientists call it exfoliation - the same word for what happens when your skin peels after a sunburn. Same idea, just a mountain-sized version that takes millions of years instead of a week. Picture peeling an onion, layer after layer, curving off in big, rounded sheets. That's exactly how the back of Half Dome got so smooth and round.


Chapter Five: The Whole Answer in One Breath

Half Dome wasn't cut in half, and it wasn't split down the middle. One crack got torn open by a glacier on one side, and the rest of it just quietly peeled around, like an onion, on the other. Same rock, same age - two totally different stories, happening on two sides of the exact same mountain.

How Scouts Get to the Top

So, how do people actually get all the way up there? Let's go find out.

These days, so many people want to hike to the top of Half Dome that the National Park Service had to set up a permit system - basically a lottery, like getting picked out of a hat. Here's why: before the lottery, as many as 1,200 people were trying to climb the cables in a single day. That's way too many people trying to squeeze up one steep rock at the same time. Today, only about 300 people a day are allowed on the cables, and you have to win a spot to go. There's one big lottery for the whole summer season, and then smaller daily lotteries too, just two days before you'd hike. It's like trying to win concert tickets: a lot of people enter, and only some people get in.

Here's the one rule rangers care about more than anything else: if there's any chance of a thunderstorm, you do not go up. Half Dome's summit is almost 9,000 feet high, wide open, bare granite - which is about the worst possible place on Earth to be if lightning starts.

But here's what I really love about this part of the story. Climbing El Capitan, back in episode two, takes years of training and incredible skill; only a small handful of people on the entire planet can do it. Half Dome is different. Thousands of totally regular people - families, even kids, everyday hikers - reach that summit every single year. It's still a long, hard hike, but it doesn't take a superhero. It takes a permit, strong legs, sturdy shoes, gloves for the cables, and a clear blue sky.


Wildcard: El Capitan vs. Half Dome Showdown

Alright, scouts, it's time for a wild showdown: El Capitan versus Half Dome. Two of the most famous rocks on planet Earth, going head to head. Let's see who wins.

Round One: Tallest Single Cliff Face

Is El Capitan's wall taller, or is Half Dome's famous sheer face taller?

El Capitan. Its wall rises about 3,000 feet in one unbroken sweep of granite. Half Dome's sheer face is about 2,000 feet - still enormous, but not quite as tall. Point: El Capitan.

Round Two: Hardest Climb

Which one has a tougher climbing route?

El Capitan again. It's home to some of the hardest rock climbs on the entire planet. One route was so difficult it once took two climbers 19 days, living right there on the wall, just to reach the top. Point: El Capitan.

Round Three: Oldest Rock

Which rock formed first?

It's basically a tie. El Cap's granite formed about 108 million years ago. Half Dome's rock is a close cousin that formed only a little later. On a timescale where we're counting in hundreds of millions of years, that gap barely counts as a difference at all.

Round Four: Highest Summit

Which one actually has the higher summit - if you climbed all the way to the top of each, which mountaintop would you be standing on higher up?

Half Dome. El Capitan's summit sits at about 7,570 feet. Half Dome's summit is about 8,840 feet - well over a thousand feet higher. Point: Half Dome.

Round Five: Most Famous

One of these two rocks is famous enough to be sitting in your pocket. Any idea which one?

Half Dome. It's so iconic it's stamped right on the back of the 2005 California state quarter, with the naturalist John Muir standing in front of it. Point: Half Dome.

Let's tally it up: two rounds for El Cap, two rounds for Half Dome, and one's a tie. Scouts, that's a genuine, real, honest-to-goodness tie. These two rocks are basically twins, born in the same geological week, and they've just been living completely different lives ever since.
